Hypotheses Page
No matter how crazy you think your idea or hypothesis might be - post it here. Sure, maybe it is crazy - but maybe it will lead to something brilliant. (And admitidly sometimes crazy can be brilliant:)
The second step is finding if research has already been done on your hypothesis. If yes, was it adequate, are there gaps, does it lead to other questions? If no, how can we go about structuring our research to help answer that question? In both cases - these lead to publications.
Hypotheses
- In most interactions we probably make too many assumptions about the
meaning behind what people say or do. Cross-cultural interactions
magnify this. So my hypothesis is that more meta-communication tools
can help us learn more about what others really mean, and also more
about ourselves. [One attempt to address this hypothesis is through the Reflection Wiki] - Communication is key in building trust, forming a community, and
collaborating to accomplish the goals. Perhaps sharing more stories
about our lives will help with getting to know each other better and
establish more trust. - Flexibility is important, in trying to work together and understand each other people need to be flexible and open - which also requires trust.
- For cross-cultural virtual teams to be effective, each member needs to go into it with an open mind, when it is mono-cultural, everyone has the same
background, ideas, resources, etc. In cross-cultural situations, so many more points of
reference exist than you could can think of - so more openess to those is necessary. - When something is cross-cultural and virtual, motivation for participation somehow needs to be addressed. When people are not immediately there, there should be adequate personal, professional, and emotional goals to keep people motivated to participate.
- There needs to clearly be collaborating for a common goal, a willingness to commit, and to expose vulnerabilities.
- It is helpful to have new tools that allow people to customize them for their own needs.
